Climate Stewards

Cornell Climate Steward Volunteers Applications are OPEN!

Are you interested in helping Madison County adapt to our changing climate?

Do you want to learn more about the science of climate change?

Did you ever wish there was a program like Master Gardener Volunteers, but around climate?

Join us to train as a Climate Steward!

Climate Climate Stewards is a statewide program that provides intensive education on climate science, communications, and potential local solutions. Volunteers train and then work on local climate change projects that help support our community's capacity to adapt and be resilient!

From supporting ongoing initiatives and local conservation projects to creating your own project, Climate Stewards is a great way to volunteer to help Madison County prepare for climate change!

You can learn more about the Climate Steward program here.

Training for Madison County Climate Stewards begins on March 30, 2023. The program costs $75 (financial assistance is available, please don't let cost deter your application!).

Applications are due by Thursday, March 29th, 2023.

Application is in the right sidebar of this page, or via this link!

You can download the full position description here.

Cornell Climate Stewards commit to 12 weeks of training (24 hours) and then complete at least 40 hours of community volunteer work to become a certified "Climate Steward." Climate Stewards become official Madison County CCE volunteers and may work with CCE staff on climate-based events and programs.

Madison County Climate Steward training is part of a multi-county training program, with a mix of Zoom and in-person experiences, and can be done in-person at CCE Madison at 100 Eaton St, Morrisville, NY, or online with in-person check-ins (though it's preferred if you can make in-person for the last two sessions focusing on your local projects!).

Sessions are slated for Thursday evenings from 6 to 8pm with a tentative schedule (may be adapted around school holidays) of:

  • March 30, Orientation
  • April 6, Climate Change Science
  • April 13, Climate Change Impacts
  • April 20, Climate Justice
  • April 27, Climate Change Mitigation
  • May 4, Community Mitigation Strategies
  • May 11, Climate Change Adaptation
  • May 18, Community Adaptation Strategies
  • May 25, Working with Local Governments & Communities
  • June 1, Effective Climate Change Communication
  • June 8, Planning Volunteer Projects
  • June 15, Presenting Volunteer Projects

The goal of the training is to help equip participants to feel confident to take actions to address climate change in your community or Madison County at large, either with educational outreach efforts or steward-led climate projects.
