Using Tarps for Weed Control and Nutrient Management
Come join Eastern New York Commercial Horticulture Program's Crystal Stewart-Courtens to talk all things TARPS!
You might have seen growing numbers of vegetable and flower farmers incorporating silage tarps in their operations. Hear firsthand from farms who integrated tarps across a range of scales, new research looking at tillage and no till strategies using tarps, and get some hands on experience seeing how to handle and anchor them.
Salt City Harvest Farm director, Jacob Gigler-Caro, will start us with a farm tour. There will be time to talk about the pests and diseases that cropped up this challenging season, before Crystal and Jacob dive into all things tarp. Topics covered include hands-on, farm-scale tarp handling, a discussion of terminating cover crops with tarps, and the impact of tarps on nutrient and nitrogen retention.
Stay around after the discussion for ice cream and a chance to talk with other CNY producers and learn about land access opportunities and resources.
Event is made possible through generous support of the NY Farm Viability Institute and AFT’s Farmland for the Next Generation. Thanks to Salt City Harvest Farm for hosting!
Free, but please register so we know how many folks are coming!
