TCE Tax prep starts January 2026

Tax Counseling for the Elderly

Free Income Tax Preparation for Seniors 60 Years & Older, as well as individuals with disabilities.

This program is offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County in partnership with the IRS. Our dedicated group of certified volunteers provides a valuable service to seniors and individuals with disabilities. The program will operate six sites from January 26 to April 15, 2026. Appointments are required.

Other Options:

In addition to the above staffed sites, the program will offer facilitated self-assistance where seniors can complete their own returns using IRS software at no cost, with a certified volunteer available to assist and answer questions.

Volunteers Needed

The Tax Counseling Program for the Elderly (TCE) in Madison County is seeking volunteers to assist in preparing tax returns for individuals age 60 and over, free of charge. Volunteers will receive training and support with IRS certification. It's a great opportunity to learn new skills and connect with people in the community while giving back. We have sites in Oneida, Chittenango, Canastota, Cazenovia, Hamilton and Morrisville.

What you need to bring.

To file your 2025 tax return you must bring:

  • Last year’s tax return
  • Proof of Social Security for anyone being claimed
  • Picture ID such as a driver’s license
  • Tax information received from banks, brokers, employers, etc. such as W-2s and 1099s
  • If you own a home valued at $85,000 or less and you are over 65 you may be eligible for a NYS rebate.
  • If you own your home you may be eligible for the enhanced NYS STAR program which will save you money on property tases.
  • If you are a NYS Volunteer Firefighter and Ambulance worker, you can receive a credit or your service.
