Join Cornell Cooperative Extension for Agricultural Leasing 101, a two-part online program covering the business and legal considerations of agricultural leasing. Whether you are a farmer looking to lease land or facilities, a landowner considering leasing agricultural property, or currently involved in a lease arrangement, this program will provide information and resources to help you make informed decisions.

Each session will include approximately 45 minutes of presentation followed by 15 minutes for questions and discussion.

October 21 | Agricultural Leasing Fundamentals

Presented by Raevyn Saunders, Farm Business Management Specialist, Central NY Dairy, Livestock & Field Crops Team

This session will cover the fundamentals of agricultural leasing and considerations for developing an arrangement that works for both parties.

Topics will include:

• Common types of agricultural leases
• Determining fair lease rates
• Costs, responsibilities, maintenance, and improvements
• Considerations for both landowners and tenants
• Tools and resources for evaluating lease arrangements

October 28 | Legal Considerations for Agricultural Leases

Presented by Erika H. Hooker, Partner and Attorney, Bousquet Holstein PLLC

This session will focus on important legal considerations when developing and maintaining an agricultural lease agreement in New York.

Topics will include:

• Building a clear lease agreement
• New York legal considerations
• Liability and insurance
• Renewal, termination, and dispute resolution
• Common legal issues and when to seek legal counsel

Raevyn Saunders Farm Business Management Specialist, Central NY Dairy, Livestock & Field Crops Team

Raevyn works with farmers across Central New York on farm business management topics including financial analysis, cost of production, business planning, risk management, and agricultural leasing. She provides one-on-one assistance and educational programming to help farmers evaluate business decisions and strengthen their farm operations.

Erika H. Hooker Partner, Bousquet Holstein PLLC

Erika H. Hooker is a Partner in the Trusts and Estates and Agriculture Practice Groups at Bousquet Holstein PLLC. Erika is the lead attorney and advisor to large farms and agriculture businesses across New York state with intergenerational transfer, wealth preservation, and estate tax concerns. She has advised clients in multi-million-dollar farm sales and purchases, assisted and led the negotiation of renewable energy leases for farms, and overseen the transfer of major operations and ownership between several generations of family businesses.
